A high street Wimpy has closed down just three years after making its return to a town centre.
The 60-seater restaurant in Tonbridge was spotted empty by residents earlier this week, sparking rumours about a possible closure.
In response, a spokesperson for Wimpy said it was “unable to comment on the closure” at this time.
The fast-food dining chain did not respond to questions as to why it had shut and the reasons for the decision.
On August 16, 2022, Wimpy opened in Tonbridge just a few doors away from where the town's original two stores had opened in 1965.
It was the first time the chain had returned since closing in the early 1980s.
Before its closure, the store was open six days a week from 9am to 7pm, as well as opening on Sunday from 10am to 5pm.
At the time of its opening, Wimpy franchisee owner Bhopinder Gill had said the opportunity to bring the restaurant back to the area was “too good to miss”.
But while one Wimpy closes, another reopens as the Ashford branch in Tufton Street has opened its doors after shutting in 2023.
A statement released by the company said: "Wimpy Ashford is now open under new ownership with a fresh team and great vibe.
"We will still be serving your favourite Wimpy burgers, chips and thick shakes."
Meanwhile, Wimpy in Gabriel’s Hill, Maidstone opened in December after a £300,000 investment.
The changes, which came under a new franchisee, saw the site stripped down and fitted with new floor and wall coverings, ceilings and electric plumbing.
There are new booths sporting the diner’s iconic red, and fresh coffee, shake and ice cream machines.
A new Wimpy is set to open in Birchington-on-Sea, Thanet, with signs in the old Birchwood kitchen appearing in February stating: “Wimpy coming soon. Feeling hungry?
The company currently has locations in Ashford, Dartford, Sittingbourne, Maidstone and Strood.
