Tonbridge Angels strengthen squad with double-signing of Jake Hutchinson and Adam Lovatt

Tonbridge have signed striker Jake Hutchinson on a month’s loan from League 2 club Colchester.

The 19-year-old could make his debut when Angels host high-flying Oxford City in National South this weekend.

Midfielder Adam Lovatt has also rejoined the club on loan after briefly returning to Sutton, as boss Steve McKimm boosts his squad.

“That gives us a squad of 16, who are competitive towards each other and will push each other for a shirt,” said McKimm.

“Jake gives us more firepower and hopefully he’ll add to what we’ve got with Aaron Smith-Joseph, Tommy Wood and Ibz Olutade.

“He’s not a big lad, about 6ft, he can finish and he works hard.

“He’s been on loan to Hitchin and he scored against QPR the other week.

“We tried to get him over the line at the end of last week but we couldn’t quite get it signed and sealed.

“Adam Lovatt coming back makes us stronger as well. It was an easy one to get done. He needs games again.

"We’d have continued with the loan if we hadn’t had the enforced break of three weeks.

“When you build a squad in the summer, it changes and you need to change it: one, to freshen it up, and, two, to make it stronger.”

Ricky Modeste scored a brilliant winner - a goal fit to win any game, according to his manager - as Tonbridge won 1-0 at Billericay last weekend.

Jonny Henly’s 89th-minute penalty saved confirmed the points and McKimm feels he’s among the top keepers in National South.

The Angels boss said: “Like all non-league players, he can lose concentration at times but I can count on one hand the number of times he’s done that - he’s so reliable and a top goalkeeper.

“He’s a big asset to this football club and he obviously likes it here because he’s travelled a fair distance for a number of years now, living Reading way.

“I’ve changed my ways in that I don’t look at other teams and other players like I used to, but he is right up there with the best keepers in the league in my opinion.

“If you spend too much time worrying about the opposition, you lose focus on what you’re trying to do with your own squad.

“My squad deserve better than that, they deserve my time and me letting them know how good they are.”
