“It’s devastating news,” said Tonbridge manager Jay Saunders.

“Devonte was just a good person and a very good footballer.

“He was a quiet lad but a real nice kid. I’m just gutted for his family and everyone involved. I’m truly gutted.

“You spend quite a lot of time with these lads and get to know them personally and it’s devastating news when you hear something like that.

“He always looked so happy. When he was scoring goals, the smile on his face, I can picture it.

“When he first came in, he was a very quiet lad, he kept himself to himself, and once he came out of his shell he was a massive player for us and a massive part of everything we did.”

Tonbridge chair Sophie Purves added: “Everyone at Tonbridge Angels is utterly devastated by the tragic news of Devonte’s death.

“He was such a strong, talented footballer and a sensitive young man.

“We are grateful to have had the opportunity to have known and worked with him and he’ll never be forgotten.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Devonte’s family and friends at this dreadful time.

“We thank our club chaplain, Neil Durling, for all the support he is giving to everyone at the club. Rest in peace Devonte.”

Maidstone director of football Bill Williams said: “We are shocked and saddened by the news of Devonte’s passing.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at what will be an incredibly difficult time for them.

“Although Devonte was only with us for a relatively short time, like all players past and present, he was welcomed into the Maidstone United family and all those who met him and watched him play will mourn the loss of someone so young.

“I know our management team will pay tribute in due course, while supporting our players who will undoubtedly be impacted by the loss of someone who was a teammate just last season.

“Rest in peace, Devonte.”

A Canaries statement said: “Norwich City are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former academy player Devonte Aransibia, aged 26.

“All at the club would like to pass on our condolences to Devonte’s loved ones at this sad time.”

“I can’t believe it. RIP Devonte,” said ex-Angels midfielder Joe Boachie.

“Rest in peace Dev,” wrote former Tonbridge team-mate Jordan Greenidge.

“Welling United are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former Wings player Devonte Aransibia at the age of 26,” said the Wings.

“Everyone at the club wish to extend their condolences to Devonte’s family and friends at this very difficult time. RIP Devonte.”

“So, so sad to hear this news,” said commentator Matt Eastley. “I enjoyed watching Devonte at several clubs.”

A gofundme page has been set up to support Aransibia’s family.

A statement on the page said: “It is with heavy hearts that we come together to honour the life of Dev, a loving partner, devoted father, cherished son, and dear friend to so many.

“Dev was the embodiment of kindness and compassion, always ready with a warm smile.

“His infectious laughter and generous spirit brightened every room he entered, leaving a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

“Beyond his loving nature, Dev was a talented footballer whose passion and drive propelled him to great success on the pitch.”

Aransibia joined Norwich as a scholar, signing his first professional contract in 2017.

He moved into non-league football with spells at Billericay, Potters Bar and Royston, followed by moves to Chelmsford and Welling.

He joined Tonbridge from the Wings in November 2022, scoring 12 goals from midfield, before returning to full-time football with Maidstone.

Aransibia starred in the Stones’ FA Cup first-round win at Chesham last season but was soon on the move with loan spells at Braintree and back at Tonbridge.

He joined Chesham last summer after being released by the Stones.
