Tonbridge Angels manager Steve McKimm reflects on a missed opportunity at Hungerford

Steve McKimm says it’s back to the drawing board after Tonbridge returned to the National League South drop zone.

Angels had the chance to move five points clear of the bottom two at Hungerford on Tuesday night but a 1-0 defeat saw the hosts climb out of the relegation places at their expense.

McKimm’s side went into the game on the back of an excellent goalless draw at high-flying Slough on Saturday but didn’t get going against their fellow battlers.

The Angels boss said: “There wasn’t a lot in the game but they seemed hungrier to get the first and second balls.

“It was a dull game but in those games we’ve got to show a little more than we did on Tuesday night so it’s back to the drawing board.

“Apart from one catastrophic error we’ve dealt with everything they’ve thrown at us but in the final third, where we’ve been good recently, we were lacklustre.

“I’m not buying the long midweek journey as an excuse, that’s nothing to do with it.

“The players did what they were asked to do in the first half, and came in 0-0, but in the second half they went against the grain and we let them off the hook through poor balls forward and poor wide play.

“Just all round, collectively as a group, and I include myself and the staff in that, it wasn’t good enough.

“We had the chance to go five points clear of Hungerford and now we’re one behind them.”

The Essex club are under new ownership after Glenn Tamplin sold up and bought Romford and they have former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara in charge.

McKimm said: “He’ll play the way he wants to play and from the reports we’ve had and watching the videos, they play nice football.

“They’ve still got some very good players, people like Ronnie Henry and Jake Robinson, and they’re going to be a good side.

“We’re going to have to be a lot better than we were against Hungerford if we want to get anything from it.

“If we’d come away from Slough with a defeat and drawn at Hungerford, no one would have batted an eyelid.

“It’s worked out the other way but we go again Saturday.”

Ben Greenhalgh's loan from Dartford is up after the game but McKimm would like to keep him for longer if possible.
