Tonbridge manager Steve McKimm faces a big pal in new Margate boss Jay Saunders

Tonbridge boss Steve McKimm will be up against one of his best friends in football after Jay Saunders was named Margate manager last night.

McKimm and Saunders were team-mates at both Gravesend and Margate and are big pals.

They’re bound to share a beer after Tonbridge host Gate on Saturday but business is business and in-form Angels are looking for a fifth Bostik Premier victory on the spin against a Gate side who are winless in 10.

Speaking before Saunders’ appointment, McKimm said: “Margate have got a good squad but they've had some injuries.

"It's a tough game – Kent derbies are always tough – and they've got some really good players.

"We're looking to keep our momentum and for Margate it's a case of getting that first win, which hopefully will come after Saturday.

"They only lost 1-0 to the league leaders and title favourites, Dorking, on Tuesday night, which isn't bad.

"It shows they're resolute and hard to beat and we've got to be right to get anything from them.”

Angels continued their fine form with a 3-2 victory at play-off rivals Bognor last Saturday.

Jack Parter scored inside 60 seconds but two goals in as many minutes gave Bognor a 2-1 lead.

Back came the visitors with Alex Read's equaliser and a penalty winner from Joe Turner early in the second half.

McKimm said: "We've beaten Kingstonian, Haringey and Bognor, three teams who will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season, so that's good for the boys.

"Our front boys have hit a bit of form and when that happens it's a massive help.

"We're ticking over. The spirit's there, like it was when we were losing, but the atmosphere changes when you're winning games because it's a happier environment."

Tonbridge academy boys Ned Snowden-Lewis, Regan Bowden and former Leicester trialist Josh Stirman have signed first-team forms.

McKimm said: "It's good to have them registered with us. They're good lads who work hard and they've got to keep working hard to progress.

"They've done well in training and deserve to sign forms."

Angels’ game at Lewes on Wednesday night was abandoned after 39 minutes due to a waterlogged pitch. It was goalless at the time.
