Tonbridge Angels boss Steve McKimm takes comfort from comeback win over Billericay ahead of return fixture in National League South

Tonbridge Angels are up for another big challenge this weekend as they look to end Billericay’s unbeaten home record.

Angels won a thrilling first meeting at Longmead in December, coming from 2-0 down to win 3-2 with Khale Da Costa’s double proving decisive.

Steve McKimm’s side have taken seven points from nine this year and would move level with Ricay in National League South if they inflict a first home defeat.

McKimm said: “They’re a good side. They went 2-0 up against us at our place and we had to pull it back.

“We certainly don’t want to be going two behind this time. They’re very good going forward, they play decent football and they’re unbeaten at home.

“It’s going to be hard for us but it’s a case of trying to outwit them to make them lose that first home game.

“From what I gather the pitch has been a bit wet and boggy but the weather this week should dry it out and give us both a chance to play some good football.”

After Billericay, it’s the rearranged home game against local rivals Maidstone on Tuesday.

The teams drew 2-2 at the Gallagher on New Year’s Day, with Tonbridge comfortably the better side.

McKimm said: “They’ll look at what we did to them and we’ll look at what they did to us.

“They’ve brought a new player in since (midfielder Andre Boucaud from Barnet) and they’ll probably have some players back from injury so it might be a totally different Maidstone side.”

The game was due to be played on Boxing Day but heavy rain left Longmead waterlogged.

McKimm hopes fans still turn out in force for the new date.

He said: “All these games are nice to play in and when it’s your local rivals there’s a little extra spice for the fans.

“As staff and players we just get on with it and treat it like a normal game but the two sets of fans have their little bit of tit-for-tat and hopefully it’s all in good spirit.

“We might have got 1,500 on Boxing Day, maybe more, maybe less.

“I couldn’t gauge what it might be on a Tuesday night but I’d like to think we’ll get at least 800.

“We hope so but the main thing is what we do on the pitch and we’ll be looking to give a good account of ourselves.”
