Tonbridge Angels sign midfielder Marcus Sablier from Lewes | Nazir Bakrin and Bailey Akehurst agree new terms while Jamie Fielding joins Ebbsfleet after leaving Longmead

Craig Nelson has made his first signing since taking charge at Tonbridge.

Nelson has been reunited with midfielder Marcus Sablier, who played under the new Angels boss at Lewes last season.

The 22-year-old excelled at the Dripping Pan, winning the supporters’ player-of-the-year award.

He made 47 appearances for the Isthmian Premier outfit in the 2024/25 campaign, scoring six goals.

“Marcus is a gifted young man with a bright future,” Nelson told the Angels website.

“He’s flamboyant, exciting, and gets fans off their seats but he also works hard for the team.

“He’s got the right attitude and application and I’m confident he’ll be a real asset to us this season.”

Sablier came through the academy at Bromley and during his time with the Ravens had loan spells in National League South with Welling, Hampton & Richmond and Cheshunt.

So he’s had a taste of the division and is looking forward to showing what he can after impressing at Step 3 with Lewes.

“I’m buzzing to be stepping up a league and joining Tonbridge Angels,” said Sablier.

“I’ve worked with the gaffer before and I know the standards he sets. It’s a great environment to be part of.

“The club’s got real ambition, from what I’ve seen the fans are passionate, and I’m looking forward to getting started, showing what I can do and helping the team push on this season.”

Defender Nazir Bakrin is staying at Tonbridge after an impressive first season with the club.

Bakrin, 22, joined the Angels after being released by Charlton last summer, making 46 appearances.

He excelled in central defence but was also used as a holding midfielder under caretaker boss Scott Wagstaff towards the end of the season.

“Naz was someone we identified very early as a key player to keep,” said Nelson.

“His adaptability and composure on the ball make him a real asset for us, whether that’s at centre-back or as a holding midfielder.

“He’s got a great attitude and we’re excited to see him push on again this season.”

Tonbridge have also confirmed that left-back Bailey Akehurst is on board for next season.

The former Gillingham youngster joined from Chatham in January, initially as cover for Liam Vincent, and played 19 times.

“Bailey’s someone I watched closely last season when he was at Chatham - he’s got a wonderful left foot and plays with real intent,” said Nelson.

“He’s positive, hardworking and brings great energy both on and off the ball.

“Once we spoke, it was clear we were aligned in our ambition.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing him thrive in a Tonbridge shirt.”

Triple player-of-the-year Jamie Fielding, whose departure was announced when Tonbridge published their retained list last month, has completed a move to Ebbsfleet.

Defender Fielding, who joined Angels from Stevenage in September 2021, made 153 appearances, scoring 10 goals.

“A massive thank you to Tonbridge Angels for the years we’ve spent together,” he said.

“It’s been a privilege to represent the club and be part of such a community.

“Thank you to Jay Saunders, Tom Parkinson and Lloyd Blackman (ex-management team), your support has played a key role in my journey, and I’m truly grateful.

“And to Sophie (Purves, chair) - thank you for your continued support and all you do for the club.

“To the amazing fans, your backing has meant the world.

“And to everyone behind the scenes, thank you for making this experience so special.

“Wishing the club nothing but success in the future.”
