Tonbridge Angels 0 Chesham United 0 match report: Successive goalless draws at Longmead as National League South clash ends in stalemate

Tonbridge are still to score in front of their home crowd this season after drawing a blank against Chesham.

Angels, who drew 0-0 with Slough on the opening day, delivered a second goalless draw at Longmead.

The hosts were neat and tidy in possession but lacked the cutting edge to break down their unbeaten opponents.

On the plus side, it’s another clean sheet and only one defeat in their opening four National League South games of the season, although they are yet to win.

Tonbridge were unchanged from the side who fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Dagenham on Tuesday night.

That came as no surprise and Angels made a bright start as they looked to build on their midweek point.

Brody Peart looked particularly positive on the right of a front three, producing several strong runs down the flank, while Martell Taylor-Crossdale offered a threat on the other side.

Eddie Simon, booked inside 15 seconds for a rash challenge, worked Chesham keeper Ben Goode from Matty Warren’s pass, and Taylor-Crossdale had a header saved from Peart’s cross.

Alfie Allen saw a shot parried after exchanging passes with Peart, then a cracking cross from Allen, after running on to Jordan Higgs’ pass, saw Goode produce an excellent reflex save from Taylor-Crossdale’s header.

Chesham grew into the game as the half wore on but struggled to get in behind the back four.

The hosts were caught playing out from the back as Matt Lench fired over and he later missed the target with a strike from distance, while Alex Lafleur also threatened from outside the box.

Late in the half, Simon and Taylor-Crossdale combined after Allen won possession high up the pitch, and the ball eventually sat up for Peart, whose first-time effort went wide.

Chesham were in the ascendancy early in the second half, although there was an opening for Angels when Peart pinched possession off Callum Adebiyi and ran in on goal but he fired straight at Goode.

Taylor-Crossdale had the ball in the net from a Peart pass - a nice strike, too - but celebrations were cut short by an offside flag.

At the other end, Jacob Adams made a fine reaction save from Lafleur inside the last 20 minutes but again the flag was up.

Chesham were looking the more threatening as the clock ticked down, playing in Tonbridge territory, but the hosts got bodies in the way and won their headers to keep them at bay.
