Tonbridge lost their unbeaten home record in National League South against bottom side Enfield.
Jake Hutchinson’s first-half double gave the struggling Towners a two-goal lead.
And while Jamie Fielding replied before half-time, Enfield added a late third through Sam Youngs to climb off the foot of the table.
Town, winless in the league since early October, had been knocked out of the FA Trophy by Isthmian South East Sittingbourne on Saturday, taken apart by the Brickies’ pace.
But they defended well at Longmead, denying the Angels many clear sights on goal, to make it a far more enjoyable journey home from Kent.
It was a first defeat in five games for Tonbridge, who remain 13th.
Rhys Forster was forced to tip over Liam Vincent’s first-minute cross and when the subsequent corner was cleared to the edge of the box, Jeremy Santos worked the Town keeper with a decent strike.
That early excitement aside, it was something of a slow burner before Enfield took a 20th-minute lead out of nothing.
Lennon Peake whipped in a cross from the left and Hutchinson made a run to the near post to glance a header past Matt Rowley.
Rowley made a fine save to push Youngs’ shot on to the post before Enfield doubled their lead in the 32nd minute.
It was a scruffy one to concede with a corner headed back across goal for Hutchinson to nod home from close range.
Tonbridge, who came from two goals down to draw at Welling a fortnight ago, needed a response and they got one.
They were back in business in the 38th minute with Sean Shields’ inswinging corner met by an equally good header from Fielding at the near post.
Tonbridge had a big penalty appeal turned down shortly before the break with Charlie Pegrum seemingly pulled down in the box as he attacked Shields’ latest corner.
The half ended with Harry Ottaway’s header from a Taylor Maloney cross saved by Forster.
Angels made two changes early in the second half, with Ryan Hanson replacing Taylor Maloney before young forward Makise Evans came on for Pegrum.
And it wasn’t long before a third change, as skipper Scott Wagstaff made way for Mo Dabre.
Enfield, desperate for a win, got men behind the ball and looked to make life as difficult as possible.
The challenge for Tonbridge was to break them down and it was proving tough.
Chances were at a premium before Dabre found himself in on goal in the 74th minute but he fired straight at Forster.
There was a let-off at the other end when, from a rare counter-attack, Peake somehow missed the target from a matter of yards out.
Perhaps that made them believe there was a third goal in it for them as they soon found themselves in Tonbridge territory again to extend their lead.
It came from a throw-on in the 80th minute, with Youngs breaking into the box and firing through Rowley’s legs from a tight angle.
