Reaction from Tonbridge Angels manager Craig Nelson following goalless draw against Chesham United

Tonbridge Angels boss Craig Nelson is confident the goals will come.

Angels’ 0-0 draw at home to Chesham in National League South on Saturday was the third time in four matches they’ve failed to score this season.

They had chances to break the deadlock at Longmead, particularly in the first half, but there was no way through.

Nelson was pleased with a second clean sheet of the campaign, to go with the opening-day goalless draw against Slough, but knows his team need to start scoring.

“We’ll always take the clean sheet, regardless of how they come, because I think it’s important and it allows us to build on it,” he said.

“But we do need to start putting the ball in the net to win games of football and I think we had opportunities to do that.

“Chesham are a good side, and they’re unbeaten, but I feel we could have got over the line with three points by taking our chances.”

On-loan Wycombe man Brody Peart was the main threat in the first half, taking the game to Chesham down the right.

He might have scored himself, as well as creating openings for others.

Martell Taylor-Crossdale tested United goalkeeper Ben Goode after coming in off the left flank and while Eddie Simon linked play nicely, a yellow card inside 15 seconds left him walking a tightrope in terms of putting himself about.

“Brody is an electric character in himself and he brings that energy to the pitch,” said Nelson.

“He works really hard, he’s going to have a really bright future in the game, and I think when he gets one, he’ll get a few more.

“The frontline are itching to get on the scoresheet and I think, when they get one, it’ll start to come.

“I’m happy with how they worked, they worked really, really hard, against a resolute and tough backline, a back five, which is never easy to break down.

“Hopefully their hard work will pay off soon.”

Tonbridge enjoyed plenty of possession as Nelson continues to implement his passing game since taking charge in the summer.

There are positive signs for the manager, who wants to see a cutting edge to go with their build-up play.

“In possession we’re dominating all the games we’ve played in so far,” said Nelson.

“It might have been marginal against Slough but in every other game we’ve been dominating the ball, it’s now just around what we do with it.

“I don’t like to have the ball just for having the ball’s sake, we need to be effective and I feel in large parts of today we were.

“We’re just missing that last little bit of quality or detail.

“When we do get into the final third, the deliveries need to be right.

“We’ve had a few corners that we’ve put off the pitch or hit them too high and not really threatened in that momentum shift when we’re putting them under pressure.

“It gives them a chance to breathe and then put the ball into our backline because they’re a more direct side than we are.

“So we’ve got to take those opportunities when we get there, the quality needs to be right, and it just wasn’t on song across the board.”
