Appeal after fatal pile-up

POLICE investigating a fatal crash on the A21 between Lamberhurst and Flimwell are appealing for a man who telephoned for an ambulance at the scene to come forward.

They want to hear from any witnesses to the pile-up but particularly want to speak to a man who called the ambulance service on a mobile phone.

Motorcyclist Edward Leslie, 26, was killed instantly when his Honda bike was in collision with a Mercedes van on the southbound carriageway of the A21 at its junction with Lady Oak Lane, Flimwell, on Friday, July 19.

Mr Leslie, a former pupil of Mascalls School, Paddock Wood, lived in Queen's Road, Tunbridge Wells, with his parents Brian and Phyllis and brother Rick, 32. He was described by police as an experienced and careful motorcyclist.

At the time of the accident, at 7.45pm, he was travelling from Tunbridge Wells to visit a friend in Hawkhurst.

A police spokeswoman said: "At the scene of the collision a member of the public who borrowed a mobile phone to call the ambulance service gave his name as David Hayes or Haynes.

"The police would like to speak to this person and any witnesses who may have seen the motorcyclist prior to the incident or saw the collision."

Following the crash police arrested and interviewed the driver of the Mercedes van. He was released on bail pending further inquiries.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact PC Dean Matthews at Ashford Police Station on 01233 611055 or alternatively call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
