Muna Khorsheed and Muna Sicander created Bis Bas sauces at their homes in Tunbridge Wells

A family-run business in Tunbridge Wells is taking off after releasing its range of middle-eastern, home-made sauces.

Bis Bas was set up three-and-a-half years ago by Muna Khorsheed and her sister-in-law, Muna Sicander when they decided they wanted to collect the goodness of home cooking in a jar. Their traditional family recipes led them to create their authentic rage of sauces.

The nut-free, wheat and gluten-free jars are suitable for vegans and coeliacs and Bis Bas prides itself on including no artificial colouring or flavours in its products.

The sauces currently come in three flavours; Fozia a sweet tomato and coriander Arabian cooking sauce, Safia a tomato based sauce with garlic and herbs and Saba, a spinach and coriander sauce. All three come in 350g jars with at £3.50 each.

Muna, 45, of Romford Road in Pembury was inspired to create the sauces when her children went to University and began asking how to make their mother’s dishes.

She said: “When my son was at university he always called me asking ‘how do you make that dish you make at home’ and after a while I got the idea of putting the dishes in a jar so he could have home comforts, away from home.”

Muna was born in Aden, Yemen with her sister Muna, 44 and said Bis Bas sauces carry a strong middle-eastern influence.

Mrs Khorsheed marketing director said: “As children growing up in Aden, our homes were often infused with the wonderful, deep aromas of exotic herbs and spices being slowly cooked. We have always associated food and cooking with family and friends sharing happy meal times together.

“In our families recipes were always passed through the generations and we felt that we had to share our passion and our secret sauce blends with the rest of the nation!

"We wanted to ensure that the sauces would be enjoyed by the fussiest of palates that is why they are mild, flavoursome and also suitable for a number of dietary requirements.”

Bis Bas is currently working on another three sauces, rice packets and a range of different products for the line.

The jars are currently available in Harrods, whole food markets, at independent retailers and in Notcutt’s Garden Centre in Maidstone.
