Things to do with your kids in Kent during the 2023 February half term

While the summer holidays are often jam-packed with days out, it can be harder to find things to do with your kids during the winter breaks.

But don’t worry - we’ve got plenty of ideas to help you keep the whole family happy during the February half term.

BROGDALE, FAVERSHAM

Explore these sprawling orchards and learn about how the weather helps fruit grow in a special guided session. Children can see the on-site interactive weather station, get hands-on with the equipment, play fun outdoor games and make their very own tornado-in-a-jar and a windsock to take home.

CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL

Build Lego with the masters at these brick building workshops. Join Kevin Hall and Emily Corl, both of whom have appeared on TV’s Celebrity Lego Masters, as they lead you through building workshops inspired by Canterbury Cathedral. You can show off your skills, learn more about Lego and try to get your build featured in the main display - if it’s awesome enough.

Details: Tuesday, February 14 to Thursday, February 16 from 10am to 3pm at Canterbury Cathedral. Workshop tickets are free and available each day on a first come, first served basis.

DOVER CASTLE

Meet historical characters and medieval storytellers at this coastal castle. There will be interactive sessions and performances, with lots for the children to get involved in, as well as a chance to explore the castle, its grounds and the underground wartime tunnels. During half term, visitors can also take part in sword school.

ELMLEY NATURE RESERVE, SHEERNESS

Stretch your legs at this vast nature reserve and look out for its many rare animals. The reserve’s guides will be hosting children’s activities throughout the week, including making bird fat balls and following the woodland walk. They will also take families out onto the reserve where they can spot animals such as owls, boxing hares and marsh harriers.

HAZLITT THEATRE, MAIDSTONE

Immersion Theatre return to the county town with their latest musical adaptation, this time based on family favourite the Jungle Book. The talented group of performers will be singing original songs, interacting with the audience and making the whole family laugh with their fun-filled show.

HEVER CASTLE, EDENBRIDGE

Give your kids a chance to explore the great outdoors at Hever Castle. The historic castle’s half term activities are all centred around nature, with lots of facts about the animals that hibernate in the grounds, environmental education and an animal-themed pebble painting workshop. You can also wander around the castle, following the audio guide included in your admission ticket.

HISTORIC DOCKYARD CHATHAM

Have you ever wished your favourite childhood games could be just that little bit bigger? Well, you’re in luck as the Historic Dockyard Chatham is super-sizing traditional family games under the Big Top this half term. Try your hand at skittles, hopscotch, noughts and crosses, the coconut shy and more, all while surrounded by the dockyard’s maritime history.

HOP FARM FAMILY PARK, PADDOCK WOOD

This fun-filled farm is reopening its family attractions just in time for the school holidays. There will be an indoor soft play centre, childrens’ driving school, giant jumping pillows and the animal park, where you can meet horses, alpacas, goats, pigs and more. The farm’s annual family circus, Circus Zyair, will also be performing daily during half term.

HORNBY VISITOR CENTRE, MARGATE

Lose yourself in Kent’s home of childhood toys. On select dates, the Hornby Visitor Centre will be hosting guided workshops where you can make and paint your very own model Supermarine Spitfire. While you’re there, you can also admire the rare Hornby, Scalextric, Airfix and Corgi products on display and learn about the history of Hornby’s model trains.

Details: Wednesday 15, Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 February from 10.30am to 2.30pm at the Hornby Visitor Centre in Margate. Sessions cost £5 per person, no need to book.

HUCKING ESTATE, MAIDSTONE

Enjoy outdoor crafts at the Woodland Trust’s Hucking Estate during the half term. There will be environmentally friendly nature activities, such as creating your own bird feeders and learning about the natural chalk landscape of the North Downs. Visitors can also enjoy a brisk winter walk through the countryside estate.

KENT LIFE, MAIDSTONE

Get up close to adorable farmyard animals at Kent Life. This half term, visitors can join in on the animal feeding sessions and learn all about their new furry friends, including pigs, sheep, ponies, goats and alpacas. You can also stop off at the Owl Academy where you can see owls and meerkats and watch a spectacular owl flying demonstration.

LEEDS CASTLE, MAIDSTONE

You might know what lies inside the walls of Leeds Castle, but how well do you know the grounds that surround it? This outdoor nature trail teaches visitors all about the wildlife that lives in and around the castle, including bats, weasels, wood mice, owls and birds, as well as taking explorers on a mini beast hunt through the woodland.

MACKNADE, FAVERSHAM

Your children can make you - or themselves - a sweet treat during the school holidays with a biscuit decorating workshop. Macknade, the Faversham-based food producer, is running the workshops in collaboration with Kate Ampomah from the Eat and Mess bakery. Children will get hands-on in the kitchen and decorate heart-shaped biscuits with expert chefs.

MAIDSTONE MUSEUM

Join in with a number of hands-on crafts at this eclectic museum. There will be clay mask making, create your own musical drum sessions, and horse headdress and mask decorating, all with a folklore theme. The craft workshops are in association with the museum’s Animal Guising and the Kentish Hooden Horse exhibition.

MARLOWE THEATRE, CANTERBURY

For the first time ever, Hey Duggee is coming to life on stage with a UK tour. The lovable dog and his friends will be making music, dancing and telling stories to fans of the BAFTA-winning CBeebies show, complete with incredible puppets and plenty of audience participation.

ORCHARD THEATRE, DARTFORD

If you’ve got a budding performer in your family, you can start them on the path to the stage with these West End Workshops. Cast members from productions such as SIX, Mamma Mia, Wicked and Matilda will be teaching you musical numbers and answering all your burning questions about what it’s really like to be part of a star-studded West End show.

PENSHURST PLACE, SEVENOAKS

Join adventurers Fred and Daisy as they travel along the winter explorer’s garden trail, which twists and turns through this country estate. Along the way, visitors will pick up hidden objects that will help them and the other brave pioneers complete their journey. You are then free to stroll through the beautiful surroundings of Penshurst Place.

SANDGATE PRIMARY SCHOOL, FOLKESTONE

Got a young Lionel Messi or Sam Kerr at home? This three-day football camp could be the perfect half term activity. The football camp, suitable for both beginners and experienced players, features fun drills, competitions, tournaments and prizes, all while learning more about the sport and upping their football skills.

SPA VALLEY RAILWAY, TUNBRIDGE WELLS

Experience what it’s like to journey through the Kent countryside on board a real steam train for just a fraction of the usual price. On select dates during the half term, adults can take their kids on a heritage diesel train for just £1 and visit Tunbridge Wells, High Rocks, Groombridge and Eridge.

WILDWOOD, HERNE BAY

You might not love the idea of playing in the mud, but your kids probably do, and that’s why they’ll love getting stuck into these activities at Wildwood. The wildlife park is helping children connect with nature by encouraging them to get messy in the mud tunnel, mud mountains and mud zones, not to mention the park’s two outdoor trails - the wellington boot trail and muddy puddy animal trail.

THE WOODVILLE, GRAVESEND

Just because it’s not Christmas doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a good, old-fashioned panto. The Cartoon Circus combines the slapstick comedy of pantomime with show-stopping magic, illusions, dancers, acrobatics, puppets and cartoon characters. The one-hour show is a perfect introduction to theatre for the whole family.
