HOWLETTS WILD ANIMAL PARK, near Canterbury

One of Kent’s biggest wildlife parks is giving animal lovers a chance to visit for less during the half-term. The park is home to more than 390 rare and endangered animals, including the UK’s largest herd of African elephants and more gorillas than any other zoo in the country – and the best part is, in the May school holidays, kids get in for just £10.

If that’s not enough, you can also spend the day at Howletts’ sister park, Port Lympne Hotel and Reserve in Hythe, and explore 600 acres of Kentish savannah. Watch giraffes, zebras and water buffalo roam the reserve from your safari truck and follow the outdoor trails around the park.

Details: Saturday, May 24 to Sunday, June 1 at Howletts Wild Animal Park in Bekesbourne, near Canterbury. Book online here.

There’s also traditional workshops, such as blacksmithing and weaving, medieval food, and music and dancing.

During the half-term break, Leeds Castle will also be throwing a Horrible Histories-themed trail where visitors can listen to terrifying tales, create their own apothecary concoctions and receive a gift from the queen. The trail is open from Tuesday, May 27 to Sunday, June 1.
