More on KentOnline
If you’re starting to get sick of eating nothing but chocolate, mince pies and turkey leftovers, it might be time for a health kick.
We’ve rounded up five foodie hotspots that have been ranked among some of the healthiest in Kent, so you can still find some great eats while sticking to your New Year’s resolutions in January.
DYLAN’S NEPALESE AND INDIAN, Chatham
Professional chefs Keshav and Raju Kandel, who previously worked at London’s popular Dishroom restaurants, pay tribute to traditional Nepalese dishes while still serving up Indian classics. It’s not all cream-laden curries and deep-fried bhajis here; instead, diners can enjoy street food like chana frankies (wraps stuffed with chickpeas and cheese) and chicken sadheko (sour and spicy pulled chicken) as well as a great range of vegetable curries and favourites such as lamb madras and chicken biryani.
Details: 56 High Street in Chatham. Open daily from 12pm to 10pm.
MINSTER MEZE AND GRILL, near Ramsgate
This cosy restaurant boasts authentic Turkish cuisine, with kebabs straight off the grill and fragrant tabbouleh made in-house. The meals range from charcoal-grilled meats and baked musakka to vegetable kebabs and Greek salads, so if you’re looking for something different with plenty of flavour and freshness, it sounds like this is the place to go.
Details: Monkton Road in Minster, near Ramsgate. Open daily from 12pm to 11pm.
MR FALAFEL, Canterbury
If you’re after a healthy meal on the go, this Middle Eastern food truck’s hot snacks come highly recommended by our reporter who visited in 2022. The cart, which can be found in the heart of the city, has a fairly small menu, but all of it is completely homemade and most of the dishes are packed with at least some of your five-a-day. Of course, its signature dish is falafel, which you can get in a wrap or as a box meal, but there’s also halloumi salads, lamb shwarma and mixed vegetable wraps.
Details: St George’s Street in Canterbury. Open Monday to Friday, 11.30am to 5.30pm and Sunday 11.30am to 5pm.
THE VEG BOX CAFE, Canterbury
In January, our reporter decided to try this plant-based cafe for his Veganuary challenge. The eatery lived up to its name with everything, from the vibrant vegan menu to the smells emanating from the kitchen, just screaming ‘vegetables’. There are lighter dishes, such as salad bowls and soups, and hearty meals including burgers, curries and pasta, but all of it is freshly made, uses no artificial additives and is entirely meat- and dairy-free.
Details: 17A Burgate in Canterbury. Open Monday to Saturday, 8.30am to 5pm, and Sunday 9am to 4pm.
THE WALLFLOWER CAFE, Herne Bay
Another veggie-friendly spot where you can pack in your nutrients is the Wallflower Cafe, a seaside restaurant specialising in vegan and gluten-free food. The menu is varied, from breakfasts with tofu scramble and smoky beans to lunch dishes such as Buddah bowls and hoisin wraps, and it’s also the only place in Kent to serve Lost Sheep Coffee, an award-winning independent coffee roaster in Whitstable.
Details: Unit 7 at 116 High Street in Herne Bay. Open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm.
