Maidstone: First travelling rum festival to come to the Kent Showground for autumn 2018

The UK’s first travelling Rum Festival is set to come to Kent.

The Rum Festival is a new event bringing rum, cocktails, food and music from around the globe to venues around the country.

It comes to the Kent Showground in Detling near Maidstone on Saturday, October 6, with more than 100 different rums along with live entertainment, food and giveaways.

Festival founder Lucy Douglas said: “The growth in the rum market and evolution in the variety of flavours and styles has been phenomenal over the last couple of years.

"Having been to some amazing beer and gin festivals I decided to set up something for rum drinkers. I know the people of Kent love to party - now I want them to experience the rum revolution.”

The versatile spirit can be drunk on its own over ice, blended with a mixer, or shaken up in a cocktail.

Like the earlier prosecco and gin festivals also held at the showground this year, on arrival, visitors to the festival will be handed a Rum Festival glass - which they can take home - and a brochure with information on all the rums to try, fun facts about the suppliers and the suggested garnish to compliment drinks.

Drinks tokens to taste the rums will be available from a stand in the main hall. Friendly "rum’uns" will be able to recommend a few varieties to get visitors started. Most are £5 with a complimentary mixer. There will also be free samples and the chance to buy bottles to take home.

The drinks will be topped off with live entertainment and dancing, including steel drums and salsa, as well as food and the chance to meet rum industry experts.

Tickets, which are on sale now, start from £7.50. The festival is open from 1pm to 10.30pm and is for over 18s.
