Borough Green: Great Comp Garden holds its Autumn Extravaganza for 2018

If you're looking for some autumn colour, you won't get a more autumnal spread than nature's one on show at Great Comp Garden this weekend.

The gardens near Borough Green have spent the last year celebrating their 50th anniversary of opening to the public and this weekend the last remaining bottles of champagne will be used to toast the Autumn Extravaganza.

The colourful autumn display predicted for this month should mean that the garden ends its season in golden style when it closes for the season on Wednesday, October 31.

The seven-acre garden in Platt will toast the season with an Autumn Extravaganza plant and art fair on Saturday, October 13 and Sunday, October 14.

The garden first opened its doors to the public 50 years ago and has since gained a reputation among horticulturalists and garden visitors alike as being one of Kent’s finest.

Curator William Dyson unveiled a 25m Golden Border earlier this year to celebrate the anniversary, and says: "It couldn't look better and it's still going really strongly providing a fantastic golden glow to the garden this autumn."

Autumn colour in the garden is being provided thanks to a collection of colourful trees including Nyssa sylvatica, commonly known as Tupelo and Cercidiphyllum japonicum, known as the katsura, which smells of candy floss as the leaves turn gold.

There will also be the red Quercus rubra and scarlet oaks (Quercus coccinea), plus a large collection of shrubs providing pivotal autumnal colour.

Great Comp Garden has also become known as the place to go to see salvias. This year, the long, hot summer and prolonged spell of hot and humid weather meant the salvias weren't cut back until well into August.

William said: "This means that the pretty shrubby Mexican varieties of salvia had a later start and now look amazing for our Autumn Extravaganza."
