Maidstone artist Graham Clarke stages retrospective at Deal gallery

His tongue-in-cheek art has been depicting Kentish scenes with more than a little humour for decades.

Now Maidstone-based artist, illustrator, author and humorist, Graham Clarke, brings a retrospective exhibition of etchings, Here & There, to the Linden Hall Studio in Deal until the end of the month.

A prolific printmaker, he has created some 500 images of English rural life and history, and of the Englishman’s view of Europe. Born in 1941, his upbringing was in the austerity of war-time and post-war Britain, and today he packs comedy from everyday life and his brand of humour to his interpretation of past and present history through the eyes of the common man.

He also has a penchant for the sea, dogs and lots of lovely Kentish hops.

Gallery director at Linden Hall Studio, Myles Corley, said: “When Graham Clarke agreed to have an exhibition of etchings from 1975 through to the present day, the gallery team and I were absolutely thrilled. Graham is one of Britain’s most highly regarded and respected artists, whose etchings are a crucial part of British art history.”

Graham added: "I am especially pleased to have an exhibition at this fine gallery in lovely Deal, a place which holds a very special place in the Clarke family history.

"One hundred years ago my Great Uncle Bill bought a house in Clanwilliam Road and for many years it became the destination for the rest of the family to spend their summers.

"Most of the works on show will be etchings, each one produced entirely by hand on copper using techniques at least 200 years old."

You can catch Here & There at the studio in St George's Road, Deal until Sunday, July 29. The gallery is open Tuesdays to Saturdays, 10am to 4pm, and Sundays 11am to 2pm. For more details visit lindenhallstudio.co.uk
