Kent's Sandi Toksvig to lead Christmas at the Snow Globe

After leaving the Bake Off tent behind her, Kent comedian, writer and presenter Sandi Toksvig will be bringing laughter, carols and the joy of Christmas from the Globe Theatre in London this Christmas.

Sandi, who lives in Whitstable, is well known for her TV credits including Call My Bluff, Whose Line Is It Anyway? and as well as presenting The Great British Bake Off with Noel Fielding until last year.

This Christmas a show written and directed by Sandi and her writer sister Jenifer Toksvig will be premiered online by Shakespeare's Globe, with Sandi and her merry company bringing some festive film fun.

Dubbed Christmas at the (Snow) Globe, the show from Monday, December 21, aims to help share Christmas cheer with as many people as possible, with audiences online invited to don their best (ugly) Christmas jumper, pour a mug of eggnog and join in on Twitter for the #SnowGlobe party.

The Globe are also offering care homes and children's hospitals across the country the 45-minute show, directed by Pip Broughton, for free. It will be available until January 5.

It is being shot on location at the Globe, which is currently closed to the public due to lockdown.

Filled with classic Christmas songs, the production promises to include plenty to sing along to.

Of the show, the Globe says: “A child stands in our wooden ‘O’ waiting for the show to begin but something’s not quite right. The theatre is bare. Where are the players, the audience and stewards? Fear not – the Snow Globe gang are not going to let anything stop them from giving the child, and everyone at home the gift of theatre, especially at Christmas time! Pull on a festive jumper, gather your loved ones as close as social distancing will allow, and watch the company restore the magic of Christmas. "

Sandi, a familiar voice for BBC Radio 4 listeners as the chair of The News Quiz which led to her induction into the Radio Hall of Fame, tours her one-woman live show The National Trevor Show in 2021, and her new book Toksvig’s Almanac 2021: An Eclectic Meander Through the Historical Year was published this month.

Throughout December the Globe is also releasing a free advent calendar with a daily dose of advent joy full of festive food, fun, song and stories, including Tilly’s Christmas by Louisa May Alcott, read by Helen Schlesinger.

Since closing its doors to the public in March, the Globe has released filmed productions on YouTube, which have been watched more than 3.3 million times; launched online family sessions Telling Tales Together; livestreamed James Bay in concert and hosted the dance partner reveal on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing.

Tune in to @The_Globe on Twitter from 6.30pm on Monday, December 21. Book tickets for the show, starting at £15, here.
