Kinky Boots the Musical brings its UK tour to the Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury

There’ll be more sass on stage than you can shake a stick at when Kinky Boots struts into the county next week.

Since winning the 2016 Olivier Award for Best New Musical, the show has gone on to sweep the board for musical awards, delighting audiences at London’s Adelphi Theatre for almost four years but now it is heading out on tour - and its first stop is in Kent.

With songs by Grammy and Tony winning pop icon Cyndi Lauper, the show is a musical celebration about friendships and the belief that you can change the world when you change your mind.

Inspired by true events, it takes audiences from the shoemaking factory floor to the glamorous catwalks of Milan in a feel-good and heart-warming tale of friendship. The story was made into a film in 2005, and became a musical on Broadway in America first, before moving to the West End.

The show features direction and choreography by Jerry Mitchell of popular musicals Legally Blonde and Hairspray and is based on the book by Broadway legend Harvey Fierstein of La Cage Aux Folles.

Charlie Price is struggling to live up to his father’s expectations and continue the family business of Price & Son, making conservative shoes in Northampton.

With the shoe factory’s future hanging in the balance, and along with it, the staff’s livelihoods, help arrives in the unlikely but spectacular form of Lola, a fabulous performer in need of some sturdy new stilettos.

For the tour, West End star Kayi Ushe will be putting on the boots to play Lola, joined by Paula Lane as Lauren, best known for her role as Kylie Platt in Coronation Street, and Joel Harper-Jackson, who recently starred in the The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time UK tour, will be playing Charlie Price.

It opens at Canterbury’s Marlowe Theatre on Monday, January 16. The show runs until Saturday, January 26. To book tickets visit marlowetheatre.com or call 01227 787787.
