Richard O’ Brien’s rock ‘n’ roll musical and its cast of kooky characters returns for its latest UK tour - this time, with Strictly Come Dancing winner Ore Oduba.

“It’s such an iconic show and so well-loved,” says the TV and radio presenter. “It’s pure escapism. You leave your troubles at the door and you’re taken into a world that’s nothing like the real one. In addition to iconic music and brilliant dance numbers, it’s just such a feel-good show.”

The musical, which debuted almost 50 years ago at the Royal Court’s Theatre Upstairs, follows squeaky-clean couple Brad Majors and Janet Weiss, who go looking for help with their flat tire. When they knock on the door of a nearby house, they end up entangled with mad scientist Frank-N-Furter and his extraordinary followers.

Since its 1973 debut, the show has been seen by more than 30 million audience members across the world and has been turned into a feature film starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick and Meat Loaf.

The Rocky Horror Show has gained notoriety over the years for its cult following, which has led to audience participation and dressing up as characters from the show to be commonplace at the theatre.

“I thought ‘I wonder what my wife is going to say about audiences seeing me in stockings’,” says Ore, who married his wife Portia in 2015. “I needn’t have worried because what I’d forgotten is that Rocky Horror is one of her and her family’s favourite shows of all time. She was beside herself.

“She also started chuckling at the idea of me being on stage in just my briefs for the early part of the show, then coming out later in stockings and high heels.”

Ore became a familiar face after winning the glitterball trophy with Strictly partner Joanne Clifton in 2016. Since then, he has performed in the UK tour of Grease and the West End production of Curtains.

Starring alongside Ore is Stephen Webb (Frank-N-Furter), Haley Flaherty (Janet), Philip Franks (The Narrator) and Kristian Lavercombe (Riff Raff), who has performed as Richard O’ Brien’s iconic character in more than 1,800 shows.
