Review: Halloween Horrors at Fort Amherst in Chatham

Halloween is drawing closer and Fort Amherst has upped the stakes again for another year of screams and scares.

Terror awaits anyone brave enough to take on the hour-long spine-tingling terror tour at the Halloween Horrors event held at the historic fort in Chatham.

I went along with some friends and family and did just that.

Clinging nervously to my boyfriend's hand, I could hear the sound of a chainsaw in the distance followed by some serious screams and I knew I was going to be in for a long night.

As we gathered with the rest of our tour group, we were led by a freaky clown and a crazy circus master up a steep hill to begin.

This year the theme is freaks, and the whole experience reminded me of being in The Hills Have Eyes mixed with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, two absolute Halloween movie classics.

With screams and jumps round every corner, there was nowhere to run or hide as you stepped into the unknown filled with characters made from nightmares.

Throughout the experience there are different areas, with each one using a different theme to scare , whether it be infested hillbillies, a chainsaw-welding maniac or a strobe-lighting maze filled with a variety of blood thirsty monsters.

I was grabbed, pulled and even pushed onto a bed with a diseased creature giving birth to something even creepier and that wasn't even the scariest part.

I witnessed my best friend, Holly Wilson, get dragged away by a zombie child, flung into a toy box coffin and handed over to a group of ghouls to be teased and terrorised.

She said: "I have never been to something more terrifying in my life. I didn't really know what to expect but it was the most amazing experience.

"I screamed the whole way through, Fort Amherst really thought of everything from clowns to dolls to devils they had it covered.

"The special effects were phenomenal and the interaction was superb. I had the fright of my life and I will be returning next year!"

The various sets throughout the tour are very well made, and the areas in total darkness play on your deepest fears. It was not an experience for the nervous or faint of heart that is for sure.

I would also suggest those who are claustrophobic take caution, as there are some parts that include small, tight, dark spaces and a couple of tunnels that have to be crawled through to get away from the monsters.

The final section is filled with the stuff that will stop you sleeping, whether it be a blood-sucking vampire speaking in tounges or a dead shopkeeper sneaking about in the dark, the scares do not end until you reach the car to go home.

Overall, it was like something from a horror film, absolutely terrifying and the perfect event to get you into the spirit of Halloween. I will be going back next year for my annual dose of fear.
