Review: Aladdin The Musical at the Prince Edward Theatre, London

Aladdin The Musical exploded onto the Broadway stage in a riot of colour and sequins in 2014.

Since then, more than 1.5 million have seen it - and it's not hard to see the appeal.

Luckily for us, it opened at the Prince Edward Theatre in the West End last June, and audiences can't get enough.

You may think Aladdin on the stage screams pantomime, but this show delivers so much more than camp dames and glittery confetti.

The much-loved 1992 Disney film transfers well onto the stage, with clever sets and more than 300 vibrant costumes helping to bring the tale to life.

Aladdin, played on the night by understudy Ethan Le Phong, brought a wide-eyed energy to the role, making the crowd root for this particular "street rat".

A welcome addition was his pals Babkak, Kassim and Omar, who provided many of the best comedy moments.

Former Sugababe Jade Ewen is well cast as fiesty Jasmine.

She provoked some spine-tingling moments, especially when she hit the high notes in A Whole New World as she floated gracefully around the set on Aladdin's magic carpet.

But unsurprisingly, the biggest crowd-pleaser was Genie. Played by Broadway's Trevor Dion Nicholas, he brought the required vitality and charisma to the role.

His big number, Friend Like Me, stole the show.

Countless dancers swirled around the stage in a blur of colour as Aladdin looked on awestruck, but Genie's stage presence ensured the audience's eyes rarely left him.

Don Gallagher delivered a delightfully menacing Jafar, and his sidekick Iago, played by Peter Howe, got some big laughs.

A quick glance around the theatre demonstrated the show's universal appeal, with fans of all ages enjoying the spectacle.
