The Camping and Caravanning Club makes its annual week a virtual one, encouraging the staycation

Are you dreaming of getting away from it all? This year's annual celebration of holidaying al fresco by the Camping and Caravanning Club has been rebranded so we can all join in, but at home.

The Stay Home National Camping and Caravanning Week, which runs until Sunday, May 31, will be a virtual celebration encouraging people to think about getting away with camping, caravanning and motorhoming for their future holidays.

It could be camping in your own back garden - or even indoors.

President and TV presenter Julia Bradbury kicked off the Stay Home National Camping and Caravanning Week in her own back garden.

“All of our holidays will look a little different in the future, and when we are allowed to explore a bit further, I think the UK is where we’re all going to feel comfortable for a while," she said.

"The staycation is here to stay. This is the perfect opportunity to get in the mood and a chance to discover or re-discover the joys of camping.

“We’re encouraging people to find out more about camping - you can take part by camping in the garden, or even in the lounge, which is a great way to start if you’re new to the pastime.”

The club will also be publishing online fun things to do at home with the children, competitions and videos, and refreshing a range of guides.

Thinking of trying camping for the first time? We asked the club to give us some tips:

* If you’ve just bought a tent, practice pitching it in the garden for the first time. And then why not camp in it too, especially if you have children – it could be your first great outdoors adventure.

* Prepare food in advance before leaving home and bringing it with you to reheat at the campsite.

* A good night’s sleep is key to ensuring everyone's up for outdoor adventures the next day. So think about a restful night’s sleep.: buy the best sleeping bags you can afford, don’t forget your pillows (it’s easy to do) and carefully consider what goes underneath you to insulate you from the cold floor and any bumps. Remember a torch too.

* Involve all the family in pitching up – you’ll pull together as a family unit and have fun at the same time.

How do you pick a good campsite?

Pick one with good facilities so that trips to the loo in the middle of the night need not be a scary prospect. If you have children, go for a family-friendly campsite.

The Camping and Caravanning Club has 103 sites around the UK where you’ll be assured a warm welcome by site staff and fellow campers.

What is it that makes camping special?

It gives busy people the chance to disconnect from technology, reconnect with nature and spend quality time in the great outdoors together.

It’s great for kids too. Research for National Camping and Caravanning Week 2015 showed 95% of parents who camped said their kids were happier when camping.

Glamping has also made camping cool. The club’s Ready Camp safari tents are at 45 sites around the UK
