Summer is fast approaching, and that means multi-million dollar blockbusters made to draw in the crowds will soon be on the big screen.

Whether you love nail-biting horror, non-stop action or family favourites, these are the must-see movies coming to the cinema this summer…

ACTION: For those who like to be kept on the edge of their seats

KARATE KID: LEGENDS: Picking things up three years after the end of TV series Cobra Kai, this latest installment of the martial arts franchise sees another kid in need of mentoring ahead of a big tournament. Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio both reprise their roles from previous films. Released on Friday, May 30.

BALLERINA: Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas) is a ballerina who begins to train as an assassin with the hopes of avenging her father's death. It’s set between the third and fourth John Wick films and will see Keanu Reeves return as the deadly hitman. Released on Friday, June 6.

F1: Brad Pitt stars as Sonny Hayes, a Formula One driver who found fame in the 1990s but was forced to retire after a devastating crash. Years later, when a new racing prodigy starts to emerge, Sonny is asked to come out of retirement to help train him for the Apex Grand Prix team. Released on Friday, June 27.

JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH: We just can’t get enough of those prehistoric dinos, can we? The fourth Jurassic World film takes the creatures to new heights when Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson) and Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey) discover a terrifying batch of mutated dinosaurs on a remote island. Released on Wednesday, July 2.

COMEDY: For those who don’t take things too seriously

FREAKIER FRIDAY: Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are back on our screens this summer as the body-swapping mother-daughter duo. It’s 20 years later and, this time, things get even more confusing when Anna’s (Lohan) daughter and soon-to-be step-daughter are caught up in the switch. Released on Friday, August 8.

THE NAKED GUN: Leslie Nielsen has left some big shoes to fill, and it looks like Liam Neeson is the man tasked with the job. He will play Frank Drebin Jr., who follows in his father’s footsteps in the police squad. The latest cop spoof in the series also stars Pamela Anderson and Paul Walter Hauser. Released on Friday, August 8.

FAMILY: For those who want to keep the kids entertained

LILO AND STITCH: Disney’s latest live-action remake is of the 2002 animated film, Lilo and Stitch. When a young Hawaiian girl finds a dog-like alien on the island, she names him Stitch and adopts him into her family, unaware of his destructive capabilities. Released on Friday, May 23.

ELIO: A young boy with an active imagination finds himself accidentally beamed up into space where he meets aliens from different galaxies. Elio finds himself in a case of mistaken identity and must form bonds with the eccentric creatures to help him get home. Released on Friday, June 13.

THE BAD GUYS 2: Sam Rockwell, Marc Maron, Craig Robinson, Anthony Ramos and Awkwafina return to voice this reformed group of ex-criminals. The team are behaving themselves, until a new squad of animal delinquents shows up and the Bad Guys struggle to stick on the straight and narrow. Released on Friday, August 1.

HORROR: For those who want a big scare on the big screen

28 YEARS LATER: It’s been almost 30 years since the rage virus spread in Danny Boyle’s award-winning zombie series, but a small group of survivors has managed to stay alive on a heavily defended island. When one of them decides to find out more about the mainland, he discovers the virus has mutated and become even more dangerous. Released on June 20.

M3GAN 2.0: Gerard Johnstone’s high-tech horror is getting an upgrade. The sequel sees Gemma, M3GAN’s original creator, demanding AI regulations and more safety precautions. When the technology used to create the deadly doll is stolen and weaponised by the military, Gemma realises the only thing powerful enough to combat the new machine is her own invention. Released on Friday, June 27.

I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER: The ‘90s are cool again, and that goes for the films, too. This slasher reboot follows five friends who are involved in a car accident and agree to cover up their involvement. A year later, their secret is discovered and they turn to the survivors of a similar event from 1997 to help escape a mysterious killer. Released on Friday, July 18.

SUPERHERO: For those who want to see the good guys win

SUPERMAN: In this latest depiction, Superman is plagued by an identity crisis that leaves him feeling torn between two worlds. The superhero, played by David Corenswet, sets off on a journey to bring together his Kryptonian heritage and his human upbringing as Clark Kent, all the while trying to keep dangerous villains at bay. Released on Friday, July 11.

THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS: The latest Fantastic Four reboot is the start of a new phase for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it’s kicking off with a bang with big names such as Pedro Pascal and John Malkovich. The team must save their retro-futuristic world from Galactus, a cosmic villain that consumes whole planets. Released on Friday, July 25.
