Review: Peter James' adaptation of The House On Cold Hill, at Orchard Theatre Dartford

My partner and I love going to the theatre and traditionally we pick musicals and upbeat shows which usually have us leaving the theatre smiling like Cheshire cats.

I didn't know what to expect of best selling author Peter James' adaptation of his 2015 novel The House On Cold Hill, which kicked off its tour at the Orchard Theatre, in Dartford, but I needn't have worried - the show kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end.

The spine-chilling tale is based on the author's own experiences in a haunted house. It was electrifying to watch and was brought to life perfectly by the all-star cast.

The House On Cold Hill stars BAFTA-nominated actor and winner of BBC1’s Strictly Come Dancing show Joe McFadden and Eastenders stars Rita Simons and Charlie Clements as well as Hollyoaks’ Persephone Swales-Dawson.

The mysterious story features the Harcourt family, Ollie, Caro and daughter Jade, who move into a house which has been empty for about 40 years.

However, their dream home quickly becomes spooky and turns out to be a nightmare and the twists and turns of the going-ons inside the Georgian House makes the family sense they are not alone.

The modern-day thriller is not only spine-chilling, but funny in places as well as moving and tense and at times I had goosebumps because I was wondering what spooky twist was coming next.

The show keeps you guessing right up until the last minute and I'm not going to reveal what happens, but lets just say it is mind-blowingly brilliant.

Even thought it made me jump at times, I was totally gripped throughout and in the end we left the theatre extremely happy we'd seen it and we were grinning from ear to ear.

The show is currently on tour and if you get a chance buy tickets as it would be a tragedy if you are a thriller lover and don't get to see it.
