Bastille cover of Can't Fight This Feeling chosen for John Lewis Christmas advert ahead of their Margate performance next month

Bastille's cover of the REO Speedwagon classic ‘Can’t Fight This Feeling' has been chosen as this year's John Lewis Christmas advert song.

The indie pop band, who will be performing in Margate during their Doom Day Club Nights tour next month, recorded the soundtrack of the most anticipated festive advert of the year.

The power-ballad, with frontman Dan Smith on vocals, helps to tell the story of a hapless, excitable dragon called Edgar.

Never failing to tug at viewers' heartstrings, we see the adorable animated character accidentally burn various festive decorations, much to his fellow villagers' despair.

When he accidentally sets fire to the huge Christmas tree in the town centre, Edgar can't take the shame anymore and locks himself in his home.

But his friend, a young girl, Ava, thinks up an idea of how to win back the friendship of the townsfolk - using his flames to light a Christmas pudding - to which the people all applaud and Edgar is happy again.

The advert has already been viewed more than eight million times on YouTube.

Can't Fight This Feeling originally appeared on REO Speedwagon’s Wheels Are Turnin’ album, and is the band's most successful single.

This year's John Lewis Christmas advert

Vocalist, Kevin Cronin, said: "We are honoured that John Lewis chose our track for their Christmas advert.

"We love Dan Smith’s version of our song and are pleased to have it star in this campaign, which now becomes the soundtrack to everybody’s Christmas preparations.”

In 2011, Dan started Bastille alone in his bedroom, releasing 300 copies of his debut single.

Relentless gigging and with the help of new band members Chris Wood (drums), Will Farquarson (guitar) and Kyle Simmons (keyboards) added to the line-up, Bastille soon shot to success.

Their debut album Bad Blood, which featured international hit, Pompeii was the biggest-selling digital album of 2013.

The four-piece released their latest album earlier this year and will embark on a UK tour next month which includes a gig at Margate Winter Gardens.
