A new barrier and bollards have been installed at a harbour after fed-up residents complained boy-racers and yobs binging on laughing gas were making living nearby a "nightmare".

Drivers have been accused of speeding and dumping dozens of nitrous oxide cannisters along the west quay in Whitstable.

It has become a popular spot for the reckless motorists to meet - mostly at night - but there have also been reports of gatherings throughout the day.

There has also been an increase in nuisance parking, blocking access to the fishermen's and yacht club compounds.

Fishermen have reportedly been threatened and abused as they have gone about their work.

A seafront brawl broke out in May, leaving beach-goers shocked.

The barrier and bollards have now been installed by the city council.

A spokesman says the authority is "hopeful" the new additions will help improve the situation - but enforcement and harbour staff will continue to monitor it.

This project is just one of a raft of stringent measures being introduced as part of the city council's Coastal Management Plan.

Barbecues and beer bottles could be banned from beaches and parks across the district - with on-the-spot fines being dished out to rule-breakers.

Bosses are also considering introducing a series of Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) to crack down on nuisance behaviour which "makes people's lives a misery".

People can comment on the consultation via the council's website and need to respond by August 30.
