Burst water main in Whitstable forces closure of Old Thanet Way between Aldi and Long Reach Roundabout

A stretch of the Old Thanet Way outside Whitstable's retail park is set to be shut for four days due to a burst water main.

Some residents in the town are currently without water, and others have low pressure as a result of the rupture.

South East Water is attempting to fix the issue, forcing the closure of the A2990 between Estuary View and the Long Reach Roundabout.

The Prospect Retail Park, which is home to M&S and Aldi, is on the stretch of closed road - but the stores can still be accessed.

Kent County Council says the route will be shut until Monday to allow for repair work to be carried out.

Road closure until 29th November between Clapham Hill and Estuary View for South East Water burst water main repair works.

KCC has classed the incident in its 'high severity' category.

Andy Beston, South East Water's regional network manager, said: “We’re really sorry for any disruption caused by a burst, 12-inch-diameter water main along the Old Thanet Way.

“Water is being re-routed around our vast network of underground pipes to minimise disruption to customer taps and repairs to the pipe are underway.

“To protect motorists, pedestrians and our workforce, a lane closure is currently in place. Anyone travelling in the direction of London will need to follow a local diversion route and we’re sorry for the disruption this may cause.

“Once the pipe is repaired, we will begin slowly pumping water back through it. This may cause the water to appear cloudy for a short period of time.

“Please be assured cloudy water is perfectly safe to drink and will turn clear simply by running the cold tap."
