Driver stops train in Whitstable after children caught playing on tracks

A driver was forced to stop his train after spotting three children playing on the line near a danger spot.

Sources told Kent Online it happened just after 3pm as the youngsters were apparently playing 'chicken' near the Glebe Way crossing in Whitstable.

He stopped the train and told them off before carrying on with his journey.

British Transport Police spokesman Nikki Nagler confirmed the authority was called to the Glebe Way crossing just before 3.15pm, to reports of children playing on the track.

Ms Nagler said: "Officers attended the scene, however after a thorough search of the track and surrounding area the children were not located.

"BTP regularly receive reports of young people trespassing on the tracks – either as a short cut or simply out of curiosity.

"All too often we see the tragic consequences when people get too close to the railway, and our message is clear – stay safe and stay off the tracks."

The incident comes just days after another driver had to take emergency action after children were seen playing on a level crossing in Yalding.

A Network Rail spokesman said: “Hundreds of people each year take on the railway and lose.

"This year we have already seen a record number of young people losing their life or being injured on the track.

“The railway is not a playground. If 750 volts from the third rail doesn’t kill you instantly, then a train travelling at up 125mph will.

"At that speed, drivers can’t stop in time.

“We want to help young people, like those playing chicken at Glebe Way, to understand that bad decisions don’t just affect them, they will have a deep and lasting impact on their families and friends as well.

“In the summer we launched a nationwide campaign to educate young people.

"The rail industry is working together to roll out a new schools engagement programme, where community engagement managers from across Network Rail, British Transport Police (BTP) and train operating companies will be out teaching thousands of children about railway safety.

"BTP officers will also be stepping-up patrols across the country.”

The incident happened near to the Glebe Way Crossing, which Kent County Council’s regulation committee agreed to close last week.

Anyone who sees children trespassing on the railways is encouraged to report any incidents to British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 or via text on 61016.
