Consultation opens for Whitstable harbour South Quay Shed development

People are being asked for ideas on how to use the South Quay Shed building at Whitstable harbour.

Whitstable Harbour Board hopes to renovate the building, to create a space that accommodates a mix of indoor and outdoor activities available all year round.

If their plans are given the go-ahead, recycled shipping containers will be incorporated into the building's design – placed around a central courtyard, overlooking the daily operations of the working harbour.

Whitstable Harbour Board recently submitted a formal planning application for the project. Now, the board wants to find out what residents think of the initial ideas and hear any new suggestions.

Possible uses for the space include food outlets, small start-up business units, museum and exhibition areas for educational use and workshops, and a community events space.

The south quay is already home to other leisure activities, including a fish market and restaurant, an artisan market and a community stage. It is hoped the South Quay Shed's facilities will complement those already offered by the area.

Chairman of Whitstable Harbour Board Cllr Robert Jones said: “We’re really excited about the potential of the South Quay Shed site, should we be successful with the planning application. This area of the harbour is our leisure zone and has become so vibrant in recent years.

“While we wait for the planning decision, we want to get residents’ thoughts on what they’d like to see in the former shed. This will allow us to get cracking as soon as possible should we get the green light.”

Until recently, the shed was being used to store items belonging to harbour users. Work to empty the shed was completed a few weeks ago and a new, secure compound using recycled shipping containers has been created on the west quay. This will now be the home of the fishermen and Whitstable Canoe Club.

The South Quay Shed consultation closes on September 9.
