A fire broke out in a town centre fish and chip shop, forcing police to shut off a road.

Fire crews and officers were called to the long-running VC Jones shop in Harbour Street, Whitstable.

Two fire engines were initially called to the scene, but this was increased to three due to the number of calls received from the public.

One witness said he could see black smoke coming from the shop - which is a takeaway and restaurant - at about 11am.

Police closed the one-way street between Cromwell Road and the high street to cars.

It is understood other nearby restaurants and shops remained open.
