Man dies after being hit by train at Chestfield and Swalecliffe station halting trains between Faversham and Margate

All train lines have reopened after a man died when he was hit by a train.

The incident happened at Chestfield and Swalecliffe station near Whitstable on the line between Faversham and Margate, just before 11am.

The man - who has not yet been formally identified - was pronounced dead at the scene.

Southeastern halted trains for several hours while they dealt with the incident, but all lines have now reopened.

The railway company arranged replacement buses.

At least four police cars and two ambulance vehicles attended the scene. The road outside the station, running from the A2990 Old Thanet Way beneath the railway bridge, was cordoned off.

Speaking this afternoon, a British Transport Police spokesman said: "We were called at 10.57 and we have officers at the scene, along with paramedics.

"A person was pronounced dead at the scene. We are now working to identify them."
