Owner’s shock after dogs kill Whiskers the cat in Whitstable churchyard

A distraught family has told of the moment they found their pet cat dead after it was viciously attacked by two dogs.

Natasha Kavanagh, 28, said her mother, who lives in Ivy House Road, was beside herself after Whiskers, who was 10 years old, died in All Saints churchyard in Church Street.

She said: “He hadn’t come home after going out and a neighbour said they had heard some terrible noises coming from the graveyard, which backs onto our garden.

“They said they will never forget what they heard and they are very traumatised by it. They heard the dogs being called by a man.

“My brother went round there and found our cat.”

Whiskers’ stomach had been severely injured and there was nothing that could be done to save him.

“Apparently the owner had no control over the dogs and they weren’t responding to him when he was calling them,” said Miss Kavanagh.

“We don’t know who it is. The vicar of All Saints Church put posters out in the doors of Ivy House Road to find us and he is asking all dog walkers of the names of the dogs he sees in the church.”

The family had owned Whiskers since he was eight weeks old.

“He was my mum’s best friend and will be missed dearly by us all,” said Miss Kavanagh.

“I hope the owner has a conscience and comes forward.”

The incident has been reported to police. Spokesman Scarlet Jones said: “We received a report on August 27 of a cat which had died after being attacked by dogs earlier in the day in Church Street, Whitstable.

“Officers attended to speak to the cat’s owner and details have been recorded.”
