Customers 'upset' as Remembrance Day two minute silence in Whitstable Sainsbury's interrupted by tannoy

Supermarket shoppers were "upset" when a two minute silence was interrupted by a tannoy announcement.

Customers and employees at Sainsbury's in Reeves Way, Chestfield, near Whitstable, had paused to pay their respects at 11am today.

But halfway through the silence, a tannoy announcement blared out of the speakers.

"Welcome to Sainsbury's," the message said - followed by some of the stores's special offers.

Shopper Jennie Smyth, from Swalecliffe, said: "Surely in this commercial world someone would have the courtesy to silence these announcements. Staff told me that this had happened yesterday as well.

"I could see that many customers were upset by this and the staff were embarrassed.

"I would love to hear what the manager thinks of this but I'm not holding my breath."

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “We apologise for any offence this may have caused.

"We schedule tannoy announcements so that they do not play during the two minute silence but unfortunately an isolated technical issue in one store caused an announcement to happen by accident.”
