Shock as Shepherd Neame-owned The East Kent pub in Oxford Street, Whitstable, closes

Landlords at a popular seaside pub dating back more than 200 years have stunned punters by announcing its sudden closure.

The East Kent in Oxford Street, Whitstable, first opened in 1802 and, in recent years, has gone from being a “wet-only” inn to a bustling gastropub.

Natalie and Andrew Hennessy took over the reins at the Shepherd Neame-owned boozer in 2018, quickly becoming popular within the community.

They soon expanded their portfolio, taking over The White Horse in Boughton-under-Blean for a brief spell and opening a woodfire kitchen in Harbour Street last summer.

However, while they had planned to depart The East Kent this year the couple say “unexpected breakdowns” have forced them to make the call now.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of The East Kent pub,” said the pair in a statement.

“We had decided this would be our last year of trade, however we have closed the doors earlier due to a combination of unexpected breakdowns.

“We would like to sincerely thank our incredible team, loyal customers, and the wider community for the years of support.

“It has been a privilege to serve you all, and we’re grateful for the memories made at The East Kent.”

The announcement prompted an outpouring of support for Natalie and Andrew following their seven-year stint at the watering hole.

Marina Blackley said: “Very sad news. So many happy memories there. You made it fabulous, Natalie and Andrew, along with your amazing team.”

Kristen Ellery added: “Gutted. Best pub, staff and food.”

The couple had been living in Australia when the call came from Shepherd Neame for them to move into the Oxford Street premises.

Natalie had previously worked in a three-star Michelin restaurant and made tremendous efforts to provide a food offering at The East Kent.

Shepherd Neame’s director of tenanted pub operations, Greg Wallis, said: “We are currently recruiting new licensees to take over the East Kent.

“We are confident that this characterful pub in the heart of Whitstable offers a fantastic business opportunity, and hope to reopen it soon.”
