Drivers are facing a 50mph speed limit on part of the M20 again after bosses reinstated the restriction.

Highways England has removed a fixed safety barrier around the Junction 10a construction site in Ashford, forcing chiefs to lower the limit.

Motorists had been able to travel at 60mph until the limit was reinstated on Tuesday night.

The 50mph restriction is enforced by average speed cameras and had previously been in place during earlier stages of the junction's construction.

A Highways England spokesman said: "The speed limit at Junction 10a has been reinstated, following removal of the fixed safety barrier, to provide a safer working environment for our road workers as they undertake resurfacing works throughout February and March.

"After these works are complete and our traffic management is lifted, the road will return to the national speed limit."

The £104 million junction opened to traffic in October after almost two years of construction work.

On Monday, a nearby furniture shop will close after the owners said disruption caused by the works had forced them out of business.

Last year, bosses permanently closed two coast-facing slip roads at Junction 10 as part of the project.

Highways England says it expects the scheme to be completed later this year, with landscaping work finishing in early 2021.
