An elderly woman has been killed in a crash between a car and lorry.

Police say the collision happened on the A2070 between Hamstreet and Johnson's Corner just before 4.10pm yesterday.

The victim, a 74-year-old local woman, was driving a silver Vauxhall Astra towards Ashford when it crashed with a white Scania articulated lorry going towards Hastings.

Police say that she died at the scene and her passenger, a woman in her 60s, was flown to hospital.

The lorry driver was unhurt.

The Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air ambulance helicopter landed in nearby a field and the organisation says that the injured survivor suffered suspected chest and abdominal injuries.

She was treated at scene by the air ambulance’s doctor and paramedic and then airlifted to the major trauma centre at St George’s Hospital in London.

Kent Police closed the main road in both directions between Hamstreet and Johnson's Corner immediately after the crash and the road remained closed as late as 10.30pm yesterday.

They also say that debris from the crash caused damage to two other cars in the area, a blue Vauxhall Vectra and a white Citroen Berlingo. But the occupants of these were not injured.

South East Coast Ambulance Service sent a total of six vehicles to the scene, two ambulances, a paramedic car and three vehicles from its HART (Hazardous Area Response Team) section.

Kent Police are now appealing for witnesses.
