Amazon is NOT coming to Ashford, despite widespread rumours, according to the borough council.

Reports resurfaced over the weekend that the online retailer was planning to move into a giant new warehouse in Sevington following a release from the trade union GMB.

The workers’ union suggested that Highways England was creating the new junction 10a off the M20 “to enable access to the new Amazon warehouse”.

A GMB statement said: "Amazon will get a further grant of £17 million from the government to build their warehouse.”

The Kentish Express reported that Amazon was coming to the town in 2014, after a leaked Ashford Borough Council document seemed to confirm the news in writing.

However, since then, the council has said that the addition of ‘Amazon’ on the document was a mistake.

This week, a council spokesman reiterated: “We have repeatedly said that we do not know who the potential occupiers of the planned site will be – and that still remains the position.

"We can confirm, however, that it is not Amazon.

“Amazon has also confirmed several times that the company has no interest in the site.

“It is regrettable that the GMB continue to ignore this fact.”
