Bogus callers have burgled homes in Ashford and Shepway, posing as council workers before stealing purses, mobile phones and other items.

Folkestone was targeted on Sunday evening when two men called at houses in Bradstone Road and Canterbury Road.

Their stories ranged from saying they needed to look inside the properties in advance of doing work for the council and pretending to have lost something in the residents' back gardens.

Once inside they stole a mixture of mobile phones, purses, wallets and handbags.

On Monday, a man claiming to be from the council approached victims in their back garden in Beaver Lane, Ashford, saying he needed signatures ahead of carrying out work on a nearby path.

He left when challenged but they later discovered someone had been into the house and stolen a purse.

Two of the victims described one suspect as a white man with an Irish accent, of medium to slim build.

Detective Constable David Cox said: "Most people who call at your home will be genuine, but sometimes bogus callers may try to trick their way into your home to steal from you.

"If you have concerns about anyone calling at your home, don’t open the door.

"Councils would rarely call at your address without an appointment and if there is a genuine emergency, police and fire officers would normally be present.

"Always check the identity of anyone who calls and don’t be afraid to close your door and leave them waiting outside while you telephone to check."

Guidance on dealing with bogus callers is available on Kent Police's website.
