Police have warned thieves who stole metal-coated rods from Kingsnorth Industrial Estate they could be at risk from a deadly gas.

It is feared that the 10 electrodes, normally used in the production of chemicals and metals, have been dipped in substances which could mix to create the extremely poisonous gas hydrogen cyanide.

The colourless gas, which has a bitter almond smell, is dangerous even in small quantities, and could cause skin burns, nausea and unconsciousness.

The business at the industrial estate in Wotton Road, Ashford reported that six silver and four tin electrodes, all a foot in length, and four nickel cages were stolen during the night on Tuesday.

It is believed the items, worth £3,500, were stolen to be sold as scrap metal.

Anyone who believes they have found the electrodes, or has knowledge or their whereabouts, should not touch them and should call South Kent police on 01303 289180.
