Up to 30 people could lose their jobs in redundancies at a college.

South Kent College plans to lose 20 to 30 learning support assistants (LSAs), at its Ashford, Folkestone and Dover sites.

The cutbacks follow a damning Osted report last year, which told of poor financial management.

LSAs whose jobs are now threatened are full and part time, working 16 to 35 hours a week.

A total 105 people are currently involved in a consultation process, which ends on June 15.

The college says people will leave by negotiation but some are expected to work until the end of term in July.

SKC principal Monica Box said: "The college is still working towards its post-inspection action plan.

"One of the key actions arising from that was the need to provide our additional support to learners to give them more focused and specific assistance when needed.

"Currently these proposals are under review and are being consulted upon with staff.

"We believe that when the service is reshaped it will be as good as any other in the country."

South Kent College was blasted following an Ofsted inspection in April 2008, when it gained the bottom grade in nine out of 12 areas.

In the follow-up report two months later leadership and management was one of the nine areas getting the bottom Grade 4 for "indequate."

The report said: "Financial management is weak. The college continues to be in a vulnerable financial position with a significant deficit and provides inadequate value for money."

It said that in 2006/07, for example, the college had an overall trading deficit of £1.59 million.

Other areas receiving bottom grades were achievement and standards ,capacity to improve and quality of provision.
