A 64-year-old driver is no longer in a life-threatening condition following a crash on the M20.

The man, from West Malling, was flown to London's King's College Hospital with serious injuries on Sunday, after a collision on the London-bound section of the M20.

Emergency services were called to the stretch of carriageway between Ashford and Maidstone when a blue Ford Focus collided with a lorry and overturned shortly before 4.30pm.

Police said the motorist suffered life-threatening injuries but his condition has improved and he is now stable.

The crash happened nearly two miles before the junction 8 services, police said.

Police estimated the lanes would be closed until 10pm while officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit gather forensic evidence and the car is recovered.

But the Highways Agency announced at 8.30pm that the road had reopened, but warned delays were likely to continue for some time.

The coastbound lanes of the same stretch re-opened a while ago and traffic there has eased.
