The daughters of a woman killed in an horrific accident during a family holiday have organised a charity event in her memory.

Former Highworth Grammar School pupils and sisters Natasha and Alice Metcalf were in a boat with their parents Gillian and Charlie Metcalf in Brazil when they were struck by another vessel and lawyer Mrs Metcalf was killed last September.

The girls and other family members and friends are taking part in an assault course on Saturday to raise money for the Gillian Metcalf Memorial Fund.

University student Alice, 18, of Plummer Lane, Tenterden, said: “It means a lot to do this in our mother’s memory.

“It is Mother’s Day this weekend so it will be nice but a difficult time as well.”

Alice, who is studying history and geography at Leeds University, added: “Natasha and I have been lucky to have university as a way of getting away from it all.

“We have both had lots of support from lots of people and have become very close to each other – we are doing OK.”

Natasha, 20, is at Warwick University studying biology.

Their father said he was very proud of what his daughters were doing on Saturday.

“They have been very strong and have been fantastic,” said Mr Metcalf, who was married to Gill for 25 years.

“This is the girls’ way of doing something positive – I am so proud of what they are doing for Gill.”

Natasha and Alice plus five cousins and friends are taking part in a Major Series 12k obstacle course in Tunbridge Wells.

All the money raised will go to the Gillian Metcalf Memorial Fund for the Tongabezi School in Zambia.

Mr Metcalf said: “We know the school well as we visited it over the years as a family. It is a place very close to our hearts.”
