Delays are expected as work on a multi-million pound motorway junction continues.

Highways England shut the coastbound stretch of the M20 between Junction 9 towards Ashford and 11 for Hythe at 10pm last night to allow for the construction of a new bridge.

The London-bound carriageway between Junctions 11 and 10 is also closed and neither of them will reopen until 6am on Monday morning.

This resulted in gridlock along the A20 yesterday as drivers used the route instead of travelling through the official diversion along the M2 and A2.

Stagecoach SouthEast has warned customers to expect severe disruption today.

It tweeted: "Due to ongoing roadworks closing the M20, passengers may expect severe disruption to the '10' service between #Folkestone and #Ashford throughout this weekend."

Later this month, the west gyratory bridge will be installed, meaning the M20 will be closed again from January 25 to 28.

The junctions will form the two sides of a new roundabout, carrying traffic over the motorway.

Highways bosses say motorists will be able to use the £104m installation for the first time in September.
