Driver Stefan Stanko in court after deaths of Brian Moon and Denise Head

A driver accused over the deaths of two pedestrians as they walked home from Ashford International Sports and Social Club made a brief appearance at Maidstone Crown Court on Monday.

Stefan Stanko is charged with causing the deaths by dangerous driving of Brian Moon, 67, of Farrow Court, Stanhope, and Denise Head, 49, of Little Knoll, South Ashford.

The 24-year-old Slovakian is also charged with drink-driving, dangerous driving, and failing to stop after an accident in his Nissan Primera.

Phyllis Wanstall, Julie Scorah and her 12-year-old niece Rosie were injured in the accident in Beaver Road on September 27. Rosie suffered serious head injuries.

The tragedy happened as the group of family and friends were walking home just after midnight after a Sunday evening out at the club.

Grandmother Denise Head was pronounced dead at the scene. Great-grandfather Mr Moon died later in hospital.

Stanko, of Russell Quay, West Street, Gravesend, was remanded in custody until December 2, when he is expected to enter pleas to the charges.
