Elderly woman dies in fire at Longbeech Park in Canterbury Road, Charing

An elderly woman died after becoming trapped in a burning chalet on a residential park.

Fire crews were called to the blaze at Longbeech Park off Canterbury Road in Charing near Ashford just after 2pm yesterday.

Officers were still at the scene this morning and had cordoned off the small home with police tape.

Four fire engines attended and crews had put out the flames by 3.40pm.

But the elderly woman, whose identity is not yet known, was trapped in the property and died.

Following news of the fatal fire, tributes were left on the Facebook page of KentOnline's sister title, the Kentish Express.

Lorraine Woonton said: "RIP to a lovely lady with the greatest character."

Kirsty Spain posted: "RIP beautiful lady I love you."

Gemma Harris commented: "Oh no! So so sad! She was so lovely. It was a pleasure to have met her."

The Longbeech Park in Charing

Longbeech Park, which is run by the Haulfryn Group, is a residential development offering permanent homes.

A spokesman for Haulfryn Group said the park remains open to residents as normal.

He said: “Following recent reports in the media, we can confirm that sadly there was a death at Longbeech Park on Tuesday.

"The emergency services were called to a fire at the Park during the afternoon and quickly made the area safe in order to gain entry to the property.

"Our on-park staff provided assistance to the emergency services where necessary to ensure the safety of all residents and visitors.

"We would like to express our condolences to the family of the deceased.

"The park remains open to residents as normal and we will continue to work with the authorities while they undertake their investigation."
