TWO-way day dawned in Ashford on Sunday as motorists hesitantly got to grips with the new road system.

Ashford’s ring road has been transformed and despite much protest from traders, shoppers, and commuters, the two-way system seems to be working.

Bleary-eyed motorists appeared only slightly fazed by the new option of going anti-clockwise around the town during this morning's rush hour.

Testing the new system, it seems most drivers are still going the traditional way round with traffic building up in West Street where traffic lights are not yet turned on.

Going anti-clockwise flowed slightly faster, taking around seven minutes after turning right out of North Street, which is open after a long three months.

Spokesman for Kent Highway Services, Phil Scrivener, said: "The switch over seems to have gone smoothly and we are pleased to have the two-way system in place."

He warned drivers to take care as more changes to road layout are set to take place in coming weeks.
