A van driver and his vehicle were trapped in a muddy verge - in a place called Swamp Road.

The man, aged about 40, got stuck when he manoeuvred to avoid floodwater near Old Romney.

It happened at about 7.50pm yesterday.

Firefighters using drysuits and water safety equipment released the vehicle within half an hour. The freed man was unhurt.

One crew of four from New Romney retained fire station and there were no other reported injuries.

The area of the incident is just south of the A259 at Old Romney. It also has a Swamp Road Bridge, a Swamp Farm and a Swamp Crossing Farm.

The latter farm is next to Swamp Crossing, a level crossing for the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service has during the present flooding crisis a general warning for people not to drive through flooded roads and fords.

It says the water is often deeper than it looks and may move fast. This means a vehicle could be swept away or become stranded.

It also warns people not to travel in heavy rain storms unless absolutely necessary.
