Former Ashford Borough Council member and ex-chairman of Ashford Borough Museum Society, Charles Pye Oliver dies

A former Ashford councillor who helped created the borough's museum has died.

Charles Pye Oliver was ward member for Hothfield (including Westwell) between 1979 and 1991.

He was also chairman of the Ashford Borough Museum Society for 25 years, from its inception until standing down in 2009.

He died on Wednesday, June 4.

Cllr Michael Claughton, deputy leader of ABC, said: “I was very sad indeed to hear of this news.

"Charles became hugely respected by all sides of the council chamber during his time as a member.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this particular time.”

Throughout his time as a councillor, Mr Oliver sat on many committees, his principal position being chairman of the Recreation and Amenities Committee from 1983 until 1991.

He was also a member of the Hothfield Common Advisory Committee throughout his whole term of office.

The funeral will take place in private however, there will be a celebration of his life at a memorial service in Hothfield Church at noon on Thursday, July 10.
